In Jigokudani Yaen-kōen, an 850-meter-high gorge above Yamanouchi — a 41–60 minute bus from Nagano Station, plus a 1.6–2 km walk that everyone does on foot. Around 160 wild Japanese macaques (nihonzaru) come down to the pool most days.

Unpaved, icy in winter — boots and crampons are reported to be rented at the entrance, on a single source. No strollers, no suitcases, no vehicle access. Everyone walks; that is the deal. The stamp at the end is steam.

Best time to see the Nagano snow monkeys
December to March. The park says the monkeys learned to bathe to get through a winter that falls below −10°C — and in January the air here averages −0.4°C. Twelve months hang from the rail like noren curtains: the longer the cloth, the colder the month; the white hem is snow; a hollow dot is mating season, when the pool is least reliable. No road, no shuttle: 25–40 minutes on an unpaved trail, icy December–March. Boots and crampons are reported to be rented at the entrance, on a single source; strollers and suitcases do not work here.
No monkeys, no refund
They are wild. In October–November especially (mating season runs October–December) they sometimes stay on the mountain, and no operator refunds a no-show. If sightings are the whole point, go December–March.
The last bus back is earlier than you think
Photograph the return timetable at the Kanbayashi stop before you walk in, and count backwards: 40 minutes out plus a margin. Tours don’t have this problem — the coach waits.

The last Nagaden stop: an onsen town with a station, cheaper rooms than Shibu, and a 10–15 min local bus (¥390 (≈$2.5)) to the trailhead. Stay here to be at the gate at opening, before the day-trippers.

Shibu Onsen
An onsen street 2 km from the trailhead: nine public baths, opened by a key that ryokan guests receive, stamped one by one onto a tenugui towel (the hand-towel that doubles as your rally card). Non-guests get only bath No. 9, Ō-yu, ¥800 (≈$5.1). This site is named after that walk — worth a night for the ritual alone.
IN THE GORGE ITSELF
Korakukan
The rustic ryokan inside Jigokudani where, in 1963, a young macaque first climbed into the outdoor bath and started all of this. You sleep a few minutes from the park gate; monkeys may watch you bathe. Simple rooms — that is the point.

In winter, yes. Since 6 August 2026 the park sells dated online tickets (¥800 (≈$5.1)/¥400 (≈$2.6), no time slot), and on busy winter days walk-ups can be delayed or refused. Winter 2026/27 is the first season under these rules. A tour with the ticket included solves it; going DIY, buy the dated ticket before you travel.
How do I get to the snow monkeys from Nagano Station?
Express bus from the East Exit, bay 23: 41–60 minutes, ¥3,000 (≈$19), no reservation — then the 1.6–2 km walk. Scenic alternative: the Nagaden “Snow Monkey” train to Yudanaka (38–45 min, ¥1,660 + ¥100 express fee) plus a 10–15 minute local bus, ¥390 (≈$2.5).
Can I do it as a day trip from Tokyo?
Yes — it is about 3.5 hours door to pool each way. Shinkansen to Nagano (79–80 min, ¥8,340 (≈$53)), bus, then the walk. Or the $151 (≈¥23,600) coach tour from Shinjuku does everything, ticket and lunch included, in one ~12-hour day. Either way you leave early and return late; two of those hours are with monkeys.
How long is the walk to the park?
1.6–2 km each way, 25–40 minutes, on an unpaved forest trail — and it is the only way in. It is icy December–March; boots and crampons are reported to be rented at the trail entrance, on a single source. No strollers, no suitcases, no vehicle access for visitors.
Are there monkeys in summer?
Yes — the park is open 365 days and the troop of ~160 comes down most days for feeding. In summer they are rarely in the pool at all; the ones that do get in are mostly the young, playing. Green-season visits are quieter and the trail is easier; the photos are just different.
What are the opening hours and the entry fee?
¥800 (≈$5.1) adults, ¥400 (≈$2.6) ages 6–17, under 6 free. Hours: 9:00–16:00 November–March, 8:30–17:00 April–October, open every day. Cards and e-money are accepted at the gate; QR payments are not.
Why do the monkeys bathe?
Warmth — and measurably lower stress. A Kyoto University study (2018) found stress hormones drop in bathing females. Hot water against sub-zero air is the whole mechanism, which is why the long soaks happen December–February and why in October–November, during mating season, they often skip the pool.
Is the Snow Monkey Pass worth it?
If you go DIY from Nagano, yes: it bundles Nagaden transport and park entry. Summer 2026 version: ¥4,800 (≈$31) (1 day), sold 1 April–30 September; winter 2025/26 ran ¥5,100–6,800 (≈$33–44) depending on route, and the 2026/27 price was not announced as of 7 Sep 2026. Do the arithmetic against ¥3,000 × 2 bus + ¥800 entry for your route.
Which is better to stay in, Shibu Onsen or Yudanaka?
Shibu for atmosphere, Yudanaka for convenience. Shibu is a nine-bath street with nine public baths — ryokan guests get the key and stamp a tenugui towel bath by bath; non-guests get only No. 9, Ō-yu, ¥800 (≈$5.1). Yudanaka has the train station, cheaper rooms and the same early-morning access to the park.
Can I visit with children, or with bad knees?
Children yes (¥400 (≈$2.6) ages 6–17, under 6 free), but the 1.6–2 km unpaved walk is mandatory in both directions and strollers do not work — small kids ride on shoulders. With bad knees: go in green season when the trail is dry, take poles, allow an hour each way. There is no vehicle access for visitors, no exceptions.
What should I wear?
Winter: real winter boots, layered clothing rated for −10°C, hat and gloves; crampons are rented at the trail entrance when it is icy. The walk warms you up, the hour standing at the pool freezes you back down. Phone batteries die fast in the cold — carry a spare. Summer: normal walking shoes and a rain layer.
Which month is the worst?
November, for the pool: mating season in full swing, monkeys often stay on the mountain, and there is no snow yet. It is also the one month with a genuine consolation — the Ebisu-kō fireworks on 23 November, which the $217 (≈¥33,900) combined tour pairs with the park.
Shibu keeps nine baths. The monkeys keep the tenth.
