JIGOKUDANI YAEN-KŌEN · THE TICKET
Snow Monkey Park tickets: ¥800 (≈$5.1) at the gate, and three ways to be holding one
Entry is ¥800 (≈$5.1) for an adult and ¥400 (≈$2.6) for ages 6–17, every day of the year. Since 6 August 2026 the park also sells that ticket online, dated to the day. Below is every price the park publishes — seven of them, not two — what the online ticket did and did not change, and the honest position on turning up without one.

Park staff work to attract the monkeys during opening hours, but the monkeys may not show up at all on certain days; appearances are particularly sporadic in autumn. The ticket is entry to a valley, not to a photograph, and the park is the one saying so.
Converted at ¥156 = $1, the reference rate on 4 Sep 2026. Prices were read on 7 Sep 2026.
QUICK ANSWERS — THE TICKET IN SIX LINES
- How much is a Snow Monkey Park ticket?
- ¥800 (≈$5.1) for an adult, ¥400 (≈$2.6) for ages 6–17, free for 5 and under. The gate takes cash, credit cards, e-money; no QR-code payments.
- Do you have to book in advance?
- No. Since 6 August 2026 you can, and on a winter weekend you should — but ticket window still operates.
- Is there a time slot to choose?
- No. The online ticket is a dated ticket — you pick the day and nothing else, and it does not move you up any queue.
- Is the online ticket cheaper or dearer?
- The park has not published a separate online price; only the gate prices above are published, so treat ¥800 (≈$5.1) as the figure to budget either way.
- Can a tour buy it for you?
- 7 of the 21 tours on this site carry the gate fee inside their price. The other 14 leave you to pay ¥800 (≈$5.1) on the day.
- Is the ticket the expensive part of the day?
- No — it is about an eighth to a sixth of it. Getting from Nagano Station to the gate and back is ¥4,300–6,000 (≈$28–38) before you pay for entry at all.
Every price the park publishes
Most pages quote two of these. The park's own fees page lists seven, and the four nobody translates are the ones that explain how the pricing actually works.
TWO RATIOS THE PARK NEVER SPELLS OUT
The group rate is 15% off to the yen — ¥680 is exactly 0.85 × ¥800, and ¥340 is exactly the same fraction of ¥400. And both annual passes cost precisely 6.25 admissions: ¥5,000 ÷ ¥800 and ¥2,500 ÷ ¥400 give the same number. So the pass pays for itself on your 7th visit — which is a fact about the photographers who come back every week, not about you.
- WHAT THE GATE TAKES
- Cash, credit cards, e-money; no QR-code payments. The last clause is the one that catches people: the QR-code apps that work everywhere else in Japan do not work here.
- WHEN YOU CAN USE IT
- 8:30–17:00 from April–October and 9:00–16:00 from November–March. Open every day (weather closures possible), and the park asks visitors to arrive 30 minutes before closing time — so in winter the real deadline is 16:00 minus the 40-minute walk.
- WHAT IT IS NOT
- Not timed, not transferable to another date, and not a queue-jump. It is one day's entry to one valley.
- THE GROUP RATE, HONESTLY
- It needs 20 people in one party, which is a coach, not a family. It is here because it explains how a tour absorbs the fee, not because you are going to claim it.
ONE ROW OF THIS TABLE CAN BE MADE TO DISAPPEAR
Only one of these seven prices is optional, and it is the ordinary one: 7 of the 21 tours on this site quote a price with the ¥800 (≈$5.1) already inside it. That is not a saving — it is the same money in somebody else’s purchase — but it is one fewer thing to buy on a morning when the window has a queue.
What changed on 6 August 2026
One sentence: the park started selling entry online, dated to the day, on 6 August 2026. Everything people now argue about follows from how small that change actually is.
Until then there was exactly one way in: walk up, queue at the window, pay. Since 6 August 2026 the park sells a dated ticket, no time slots through webket, its own ticketing platform. That is the whole change — and most of the advice written before that date is now describing a park that no longer works quite that way.
You choose a date
And only a date. There are no time slots, so nothing about the ticket decides when you arrive or how long you stay.
It is the park's own platform
Not a reseller. The ticket you buy is the park's entry ticket, bought early.
It does not skip a queue
There is one gate and one path. What it removes is the risk of reaching that gate and being turned back, not the walk or the wait.
The price is not published separately
The park has not published a separate online price; only the gate prices above are published. Budget ¥800 (≈$5.1) and treat anything else as a surprise, not a plan.
How far ahead is not published either
The park has not said how many weeks the calendar runs. If you are planning months out, check the date is offered before you build a day around it.
The window did not close
Ticket window still operates; on crowded days entry may be delayed or refused. Online is now the safer of two live options, not the only one.
Two things on this page are deliberately missing because the park has not published them: how far ahead the online calendar opens, and whether the online price differs from ¥800 (≈$5.1) · everything else here is from the park's own pages · checked 2026-09-06 · or the version where the date, the ticket and the bus are one booking →
Turning up without one
The ticket window is still open every day the park is. The question is not whether you can buy at the gate — you can — but on which days that stops being a safe assumption.
Ticket window still operates; on crowded days entry may be delayed or refused. That single sentence is the park's own, and it is the whole risk: not that you will be charged more, but that on a particular kind of day you may wait, or not get in when you wanted to.
When the park is congested, entry may be limited for a time; the park has said it plans to cap the number of tickets on especially busy days, and asks visitors to come by public transport because parking is very limited. That is the park's wording, stated in the park's winter 2025/26 notice; no winter 2026/27 notice published as of 2026-09-03.
The park names the New Year holidays, long weekends and winter weekends. Those are also the days the monkeys are most reliably in the water, which is exactly why everyone is there.
Reportedly around 2,000 visitors a day (media reports citing the park, June 2026); the park itself has not published the number It appears on this page in this paragraph and nowhere else — no figure elsewhere on this site is built on it.
The honest rule: in November–March, on a weekend or a holiday, arrive holding a ticket — bought online or carried by a tour. From April–October, on an ordinary weekday, the window is still a perfectly good plan and the queue is a few minutes.
Which months are the crowded ones →ON A WINTER WEEKEND, ARRIVE HOLDING SOMETHING
Those are the days the park warns about, and they are also the days worth coming for. Between buying online and letting a tour carry it, the tour is the version that also puts you on a vehicle that runs on the crowded morning and knows what time to leave — on any other day of the year, the window is still fine and this strip is not for you.
THE PARK HAS NOT PUBLISHED A DAILY CAP · THIS IS ABOUT QUEUES AND THE LAST BUS, NOT ABOUT BEING TURNED AWAY
The 7 tours that carry the ticket for you
7 of the 21 tours on this site put the gate fee inside the price they advertise. That is the third way to hold a ticket, and the only one where you never handle it.
A tour that includes the gate fee removes the decision entirely: there is nothing to buy ahead, nothing to show, and no busy-day risk to weigh. It is also the only version where the ¥800 (≈$5.1) is genuinely invisible — you never see it as a line.

What ¥800 (≈$5.1) does not buy
The ticket is entry, and entry only. Four things people expect it to include are not in it, and one of them is most of the money.
THE TICKET IS THE SMALL NUMBER
¥800 (≈$5.1) is between an eighth and a sixth of what a self-guided day from Nagano Station costs — 12% of the express-bus version and 16% of the train-and-local-bus one. Every hour spent optimising the entry fee is an hour spent on the cheapest part of the day.
- WHO CANNOT USE A TICKET AT ALL
- Wheelchairs and pushchairs cannot be used — the approach is slopes and stairs, and no animals may be brought in, service dogs included — the animal rule is absolute and catches people out every week.
- BEFORE YOU BUY FOR A PARTICULAR DAY
- The park publishes a predicted time for the monkeys coming down from the mountain and asks visitors to check before traveling and again on the day, through its live cameras and social accounts On an autumn date that forecast is worth more than the ticket.
Put the other way: the gate fee is the one number on this page that will not change your budget. The transport decision will.
Every route to the gate, priced →THE PART THAT IS ACTUALLY WORTH DECIDING
Everything the ticket does not cover is transport, and transport is where the money and the timing both are. A guided day is roughly 3× the self-guided one and buys the vehicle, the ¥800 (≈$5.1) and somebody watching the clock; the buses buy you the same valley for less and leave the clock to you.
THE WALK AND THE MONKEYS ARE IN NEITHER COLUMN
The ticket, in 10 questions
How much is a ticket to the Snow Monkey Park?
¥800 (≈$5.1) for an adult aged 18 and over and ¥400 (≈$2.6) for ages 6–17; 5 and under go free with an adult. The park also publishes a half-price rate of ¥400 (≈$2.6) / ¥200 (≈$1.3) for visitors with a disability certificate, ¥680 (≈$4.4) / ¥340 (≈$2.2) for groups of 20 or more, and school rates of ¥300 (≈$1.9) and ¥200 (≈$1.3).
Can you buy Snow Monkey Park tickets online?
Yes, since 6 August 2026. The park sells a dated ticket, no time slots on its own platform, webket.jp. You choose the date and nothing else — there is no time slot and no separate queue at the gate.
Do you need to book Snow Monkey Park tickets in advance?
Not as a rule. Ticket window still operates; on crowded days entry may be delayed or refused, so on a winter weekend or a holiday it is worth arriving with one. On an ordinary weekday outside winter, buying at the window is still a normal way to visit.
Is the online ticket more expensive than the gate?
The park has not published a separate online price; only the gate prices above are published. Budget the ¥800 (≈$5.1) adult fee whichever way you buy, and check the total before you confirm.
Is there a daily limit on Snow Monkey Park tickets?
The park has said that when the park is congested, entry may be limited for a time; the park has said it plans to cap the number of tickets on especially busy days, and asks visitors to come by public transport because parking is very limited. It has not published a daily number. Reportedly around 2,000 visitors a day (media reports citing the park, June 2026); the park itself has not published the number
What payment does the Snow Monkey Park accept?
Cash, credit cards, e-money; no QR-code payments. The QR-code payment apps used almost everywhere else in Japan are not accepted, so do not arrive relying on one.
Do snow monkey tours include the park ticket?
7 of the 21 tours on this site do — including the $140 (≈¥21,800) day trip from Nagano Station, which carries transport, the ¥800 (≈$5.1) entry and lunch in one price. The other 14 leave the gate fee to you.
Is there a Snow Monkey Park annual pass, and is it worth it?
Yes: ¥5,000 (≈$32) for an adult and ¥2,500 (≈$16) for a child. Both cost exactly 6.25 admissions, so it starts saving money on the 7th visit — which makes it a pass for local photographers, not for a trip.
What time can you use a Snow Monkey Park ticket?
Within opening hours: 8:30–17:00 from April–October and 9:00–16:00 from November–March, open every day (weather closures possible). The park asks visitors to arrive 30 minutes before closing time, and the 25–40-minute walk happens before that, not after it.
Can you get a refund if the monkeys are not there?
No, and the park is open about why: park staff work to attract the monkeys during opening hours, but the monkeys may not show up at all on certain days; appearances are particularly sporadic in autumn. The ticket buys entry to the valley. The park publishes a same-day prediction and live cameras so you can decide before you travel rather than after.
