Snow monkey tour from Hakuba — everything goes through Nagano, and only the bus has a price

Hakuba is 60–70 minutes west of Nagano; the Snow Monkey Park is 41–60 minutes east of it. Every way there — the bus, the one tour that collects you, a private car — runs through Nagano, and exactly one figure on this page is quoted from Hakuba: the bus fare. The rest is quoted from Nagano or not quoted at all, and this page says which is which. Prices are a snapshot from 7 Sep 2026.

QUICK ANSWERS — THE PAGE IN FIVE LINES

Can you see the snow monkeys from Hakuba?
Yes, as a day trip through Nagano: the express bus is ¥3,500 (≈$22) one way in winter and takes 60–70 minutes to Nagano East Exit bay 26, and from there the park is another 41–60 minutes.
What does the day cost from Hakuba on your own?
¥12,100–13,800 (≈$78–88) per person in winter: ¥3,500 (≈$22) each way to Nagano plus the ¥5,100–6,800 (≈$33–44) Nagano day, park entry included — about twice what the same day costs someone staying in Nagano.
Is there a tour that picks you up in Hakuba?
One: the $140 (≈¥21,800) Snow Monkeys, Zenkōji Temple & Sake day trip runs shuttles from 4 points in Hakuba and Tsugaike from December to March. On our snapshot date none of the four was bookable — check yours before planning around it.
Can a private car collect me in Hakuba?
Five of the eight private cars name a Hakuba pickup point: $447–526 (≈¥69,700–82,100) for the whole car, park entry not included. Whether the price changes with the pickup point, none of the listings says.
How much longer is the day than from Nagano?
About two hours: the shuttle departures are 10–12 hours against 8 from Nagano Station, and on your own the two bus legs add 60–70 minutes each way to a 5–6 hour Nagano day.

What the day costs from Hakuba on your own

Four fares, and two of them exist only because you are sleeping in the wrong valley. Here is the whole receipt, per adult, in winter.

Staying in Hakuba does not change the park, the trail or the ticket — it adds the Nagano road, twice. That is the whole difference: ¥7,000 (≈$45) of bus on top of a day that otherwise costs ¥5,100–6,800 (≈$33–44).

Green-season fare is ¥2,500 (≈$16) each way, which brings the day to ¥10,100–11,800 (≈$65–76) · children pay ¥1,750 (≈$11) on the winter bus and ¥400 (≈$2.6) at the park gate, free under 6 · park entry is in every figure above · the 1.6–2 km trail, 25–40 minutes on foot each way, is in none of them and cannot be bought out of.

The listing names these four winter departures and says the Hakuba shuttle runs December through March. It advertises no supplement for them — but it does not quote a price for them either, and on our snapshot date, 7 Sep 2026, none of the four was bookable; the listing offered 15 December as its next date. Treat the Hakuba price and the Hakuba dates as things to confirm, not as things this page knows.

Or get to Nagano first, and take your pick of nine

Nothing on this page beats the simplest plan: treat Hakuba as one bus ride from the start line, and choose from there.

The bus to Nagano costs ¥3,500 (≈$22) and runs in 60–70 minutes. Once you are at Nagano Station, every tour on the Nagano hub is open to you — nine of them, from $77 (≈¥12,000) for a guide alone to $449 for the dearest advertised day. Three of the nine have the ¥800 (≈$5.1) gate fee in the price; the rest leave it at the window. That is usually the cheapest way to be guided from Hakuba.

BUS + THE MOST-REVIEWED NAGANO DAY ¥7,000 + $140

Two bus legs and the 965-review day trip: about ¥7,000 (≈$45) of bus on top of $140 (≈¥21,800), with the park ticket, lunch and Zenkō-ji already inside the tour price.

Which of the three is worth it, and for whom

1 · A group of up to six off the slopes

A private car that lists Hakuba is $447 (≈¥69,700) for the whole vehicle, $74 each with six — less per head than the bus fare plus a guided day.

BUT — the park ticket is extra at ¥800 (≈$5.1) a head, and no listing says whether boarding in Hakuba costs the same as boarding in Tokyo.

2 · Anyone traveling in December to March

The shuttle departures exist only in those months, and they are the only way to be collected in the valley for a per-person price.

BUT — all four showed no availability on our snapshot date; the dates are the thing to check first, not the price.

3 · Anyone happy on a bus

¥3,500 (≈$22) each way to Nagano, then the ordinary Nagano day — ¥12,100–13,800 (≈$78–88) all in, entry included, nothing to reserve.

BUT — it is a long day: 60–70 minutes of bus each way on top of a 5–6 hour trip, and the last 1.6–2 km is on foot whatever you paid.

4 · Not: anyone hoping to skip Nagano

There is no route from Hakuba to the park that avoids the Nagano side of the valley — the shuttle, the cars and the buses all go that way.

BUT — the road is the same one the ski buses use, and in winter it is the busiest hour of the day in both directions.

THE WORDS ON THIS PAGE, DEFINED ONCE

HAKUBA
The ski valley in north-west Nagano prefecture, 60–70 minutes by express bus from Nagano Station; the Snow Monkey Park is on the far side of the city, 41–60 minutes east of it.
THE HAKUBA–NAGANO BUS
The express coach between the valley and Nagano East Exit bay 26: ¥3,500 (≈$22) one way in winter 2025/26, ¥2,500 (≈$16) in the green season, ¥1,750 (≈$11) for a child in winter, 60–70 minutes.
JIGOKUDANI
«Hell's Valley» — the steaming gorge in Yamanouchi where the Snow Monkey Park and its hot-spring pool sit.
DATED TICKET
The park's online entry ticket for a specific date, ¥800 (≈$5.1) per adult, sold since 6 August 2026; on peak days visitors without one can be turned away.
KANBAYASHI
The car park and trailhead where every vehicle stops; from there the 1.6–2 km forest trail to the pool is on foot, 25–40 minutes each way.

Is Hakuba too far for the snow monkeys? And 7 more honest answers

Can you do the snow monkeys as a day trip from Hakuba?

Yes. The express bus to Nagano East Exit bay 26 takes 60–70 minutes and costs ¥3,500 (≈$22) one way in winter; from Nagano the park is another 41–60 minutes by express bus, then the 1.6–2 km trail on foot. Allow roughly two hours more than someone starting in Nagano.

How much does it cost from Hakuba?

¥12,100–13,800 (≈$78–88) per adult on your own in winter, park entry included — ¥3,500 (≈$22) each way to Nagano plus the ¥5,100–6,800 (≈$33–44) Nagano day. In the green season the bus is ¥2,500 (≈$16) each way, so the day is ¥10,100–11,800 (≈$65–76).

Is there a snow monkey tour that starts in Hakuba?

One: the $140 (≈¥21,800) Snow Monkeys, Zenkoji Temple & Sake Day Trip, rated 4.9 from 965 reviews, runs winter shuttles from 4 points — Hakuba Tokyu Hotel in Wadano, Happo bus terminal, La Vigne in Echoland and the Tsugaike-kōgen stop — from December to March. The day is 10–12 hours instead of 8.

Why does this page keep saying to check the Hakuba dates?

Because on 7 Sep 2026, our snapshot date, none of the four Hakuba departures was bookable for 20 January 2027; the listing offered 15 December as its next date. The shuttle is real and the listing describes it, but a page that told you it was available would be inventing something.

Can a private car pick me up in Hakuba?

Five of the eight private cars name a Hakuba pickup point: $447–526 (≈¥69,700–82,100) for the whole car, all six-seaters, park entry not included. None of them says whether the price changes with the pickup point — ask before booking.

Is it cheaper to move to Nagano for the night?

For one day, no: a night in Nagano has to beat ¥7,000 (≈$45) of bus. For two visits, or for an early start at the park gate, it usually does.

Does the park ticket come with any of this?

With the $140 (≈¥21,800) tour, yes. With the private cars, no — ¥800 (≈$5.1) per adult and ¥400 (≈$2.6) for ages 6–17 at the gate. On your own it is already inside the ¥5,100–6,800 (≈$33–44) figure above.

Can I ski and see the monkeys on the same day?

It is one full day either way — 60–70 minutes of bus, 41–60 minutes more to the park and the 25–40-minute walk each way. The tours that collect you in Hakuba leave between 07:20 and 08:10 and return 10–12 hours later, which is a ski day gone.
