Nagano itinerary for the snow monkeys — where you sleep decides everything else
There are no departure times on this page, on purpose: timetables change and a plan built on them is wrong within a season. What stays put is the park’s gate — its hours, its «arrive 30 minutes before closing», and the durations the carriers themselves publish. So every plan here is a ladder of offsets from the gate. Bring your own departures board; this page gives you the shape.

- The park closes at 16:00 from November–March and asks visitors to arrive 30 minutes before, so the trail — 25–40 minutes — should start no later than about 14:50 to arrive by 15:30.
- Can I fit it between two trains at Nagano?
- In the best case the round trip is 162 minutes (66 min each way plus 30 in the park); with the usual bus interval and trail conditions it isn’t a plan to build a connection on.

A timetable is true until the next revision; a page that copies it is wrong the week after and stays wrong. The park’s hours, its 30-minute request and the carriers’ durations are published and stable — so each plan is a ladder of offsets from the gate, and you lay it over whichever departures board is current. The single exception is the $140 (≈¥21,800) tour’s 09:35 start from Nagano, because the operator prints it on the product itself.
Plan A — sleeping in Nagano city

The coach from Shinjuku is $151 (≈¥23,600) with entry and a sukiyaki lunch included — about the same money as the self-made day, with the lunch and the gate thrown in and no transfers. It is the only place on this page where the tour is simply the better buy. A night in Nagano turns this into plan A.

The morning, the whole opening day if you want it, the descent forecast read over breakfast, and the village’s public baths afterwards.
What it doesn’t fix
The monkeys may still not come. Park staff work to attract the monkeys during opening hours, but the monkeys may not show up at all on certain days; appearances are particularly sporadic in autumn — the valley only gives you the slack to wait, not a guarantee. The trail is the same 1.6–2 km.
Who it doesn’t suit
Anyone doing Nagano as a day from Tokyo, or carrying luggage they can’t leave at a station — no large lockers — leave luggage at Nagano Station, reportedly.
NO TOUR SELLS PLAN C A night in the valley is something you arrange yourself, and the stay guide compares Shibu, Yudanaka and Nagano city without taking a commission from any of them. If you would rather not stay over, the guided day out of Nagano Station is the same morning with the alarm set later.
Plan D — three hours between two trains at Nagano
USUALLY NOTThere is no ladder here, on purpose. A plan that only works when everything goes right shouldn’t be laid out as if it works.
With the fastest bus, the shortest walk and half an hour at the pool, the round trip is 162 minutes. That is the ceiling, not the plan.

Every figure in that sum is the optimistic end of its range, and none of them is the bus you’ll actually be standing at the stop for.
THREE HOURS IS NOT ENOUGH Nothing on sale makes three hours work. Every guided day runs 4 to 12 hours, because it is the same valley and the same 1.6–2 km of footpath at the end of it. With three hours, spend them at Zenkō-ji and come back for the monkeys with a night in hand.
What breaks a plan — and which plan survives it
FOUR FAILURE MODESThe troop doesn’t come down
Park staff work to attract the monkeys during opening hours, but the monkeys may not show up at all on certain days; appearances are particularly sporadic in autumn. Only plan C has the slack to wait. All plans: read the park’s descent forecast that morning.
The gate is full
When the park is congested, entry may be limited for a time, and on crowded days entry may be delayed or refused. The dated online ticket (since 6 Aug 2026, dated ticket, no time slots) or a tour with entry included takes this out of plans A, B and C. Plan D has no time to absorb a queue.
Winter closes at 16:00
Arrive by 15:30, so start the trail by about 14:50 — which sets a hard latest bus from Nagano and, in plan B, a hard latest shinkansen from Tokyo. Plan C can ignore this entirely by going in the morning.
Luggage and footwear
Wheelchairs and pushchairs cannot be used on the trail; small paid lockers at the trailhead shop, reportedly — leave luggage at Nagano Station. Boots, crampons and jackets rented/sold at the shop by the trailhead (Oct–May), reportedly.
TWO OF THE FOUR ARE SOLVED BY A TICKET IN HAND The park’s own dated ticket, or a tour that carries it. The other two are solved by a bed in the valley, or by not planning plan D. Nothing sold anywhere solves the weather, and no operator claims otherwise.

In the best case the round trip is 162 minutes (66 min each way plus 30 in the park), but every figure in that sum is optimistic and the express bus runs up to 13/day in winter (6 Dec–6 Apr 2025/26), reportedly. Worst case is 230 minutes before any wait. Don’t build a connection on it.

This page gives offsets, not clock times, because timetables change. Count back from the gate: in winter be there by 15:30 (the park closes at 16:00 and asks for 30 minutes’ margin), so start the trail by about 14:50 and leave Nagano Station about 100 minutes before that in the worst case.
Is it worth staying overnight in Shibu Onsen or Yudanaka?
For the monkeys, it is the best version: 45 minutes from bed to gate (a 5-minute ¥250 (≈$1.6) bus plus the 25–40 minute trail) and 2 h or more in the park, with time to wait for a late descent. This site names no inn and takes nothing for stays — the stay guide compares the villages.

Pick your bed, then count back from the gate — the timetable is the last thing you look at
Nagano city gives you the standard day, Tokyo the long one, the valley the only one with time to wait. From Tokyo the coach is the better buy; from Nagano a tour is a convenience; in the valley there is nothing to buy but a night.
