THE TEMPLE ISN’T THE REASON Zenkō-ji is a bus ride and ¥190 (≈$1.2) from Nagano Station, and the ticket that opens the dark passage under the altar is ¥800 (≈$5.1) more. What a tour solves is the monkeys — the two hours of road, the ¥800 (≈$5.1) gate fee, the walk in — and it happens to put the temple on the way. Buy it for the first half of the day.

Read before bookingA group stop that walks the approach, photographs the gate and looks into the outer sanctuary has reached none of the ticketed interiors — and the Sanmon and the sutra repository do not open until 9:00, which rules them out of any tour that leaves early for the park.

- The Main Hall opens an hour before the sunrise morning service and shuts at 16:30 (Apr–Oct), 16:15 (Mar, Nov) or 16:00 (Dec–Feb); the Sanmon, Kyōzō and museum are 9:00–16:00 all year. Open every day; the paid areas close early on 28 and 31 December.

- Bus from Nagano Station Zenkō-ji exit bay 1, about 10–15 minutes, ¥190 (≈$1.2) on an ordinary route bus and ¥150 (≈$1) on the Binzuru-gō loop; or about 2 km straight up Chūō-dōri, roughly 30 minutes on foot.
- OKAIDAN
- A pitch-dark passage under the altar; you shuffle forward with your right hand on the wall feeling for the «key to paradise», the lock hung directly beneath the hidden principal image. Under five minutes, entered by stairs, and it needs the ¥800 (≈$5.1) ticket.
- ASAJI
- The morning service is held every day of the year, starting at sunrise — 5:30 at midsummer, 7:00 at midwinter — and both it and the rosary blessing on the approach are free to anyone standing in the outer sanctuary.
