Nagano has the second-most sake breweries of any prefecture, and four tours here end the day with a tasting. What that tasting is depends almost entirely on the month you go, and the operators do not say so.

Sake is brewed in the cold — November to April in Nagano. A February visit can walk in on a working brewery; an August one is walking into a shop. Both are sold as «sake tasting», and the difference is the whole experience.

BUY THE DAY, NOT THE SAKE The tasting counter beside Zenkō-ji is free and open to anyone who walks in, so no tour is selling you access to it. What the four tours sell is a guide who explains what is in the cup, in English, at the end of a day that already had to get you to the monkeys and back.

Read before bookingThe drinking age in Japan is twenty, and lowering the age of majority to eighteen in 2022 did not change it. If anyone in the party is under it, the tasting is a stop they will stand through.

- 78 sake breweries as of 1 September 2023 — second most of any prefecture; the brewers’ association says «about 80».
- GI NAGANO
- Nagano ran its own appellation scheme for sake and wine from 2002; sake moved to the national geographical-indication system when GI Nagano was designated on 30 June 2021 — all Nagano rice, Nagano water, every step done in Nagano, and a sensory exam.
- YOSHINOYA
- The brewery beside Zenkō-ji, founded 1637 and sixteen generations in, three minutes from the Daimon bus stop; it makes sake, Zenkō-ji miso and amazake, the shop is open 8:30–17:30 and the tasting is free. The self-guided works tour is free too; a guided one is ¥1,000 (≈$6.4) a head and has to be booked.
- SHUSEN KURANO
- Founded 1540 in Kawanakajima, Nagano city — the prefecture’s oldest brewery. Free tasting, but no brewery tour and no cellar-door sales.
- BREWING SEASON
- Sake is brewed in the cold — November to April in Nagano — so a February visit can walk in on brewing and an August one cannot; breweries say as much when they take tour bookings.

The sake tasting you could reach on your own. Two hours of road each way, a ¥800 (≈$5.1) ticket and a 25–40-minute walk are what a tour is actually for — and 4 of them put both halves in one booking.
